Many different legends. Different peoples each had their own stories about it, and the stories often changed over time. The druids, for example, would go out on the sixth night of the moon and cut the mistletoe from an oak tree with a golden sickle. They said that the mistletoe was the soul of the Oak. And the Oak was the King of all trees.
